The reasoning behind the Pen was principally a marketing one. Peliknya, tiada sambutan pun dilakukan pada hari ‘Malaysia’ itu sendiri ditubuhkan, kecuali pada 16/09/2008.

KUALA KRAI: Janji Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, untuk menjadikan kawasan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Manek Urai sebagai ‘anak emas’ Kerajaan Pusat jika Barisan Nasional (BN) menang pada pilihan raya kecil 14 Julai ini, tawaran yang sama sekali tidak boleh ditolak seluruh pengundinya.

Calon BN, Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, meminta pengundi supaya memberi peluang BN memenangi pilihan raya kecil ini, untuk membolehkan mereka melihat sendiri keupayaan Kerajaan Pusat menunaikan segala janji.

“Seluruh pengundi termasuk penyokong Pas perlu sedar, kemenangan BN di Manek Urai sama sekali tidak akan menjejaskan kedudukan Kerajaan Pas Kelantan, yang sudah selesa menguasai kedudukan majoriti dua pertiga dalam DUN.

“Namun, pengundi perlu sedar menerusi tawaran BN di Manek Urai kali ini, mereka berpeluang menikmati pelbagai bentuk pembangunan dunia untuk kesejahteraan di akhirat, yang mampu dibawa Kerajaan Pusat ke sini, menerusi wakil BN.

“Tempoh dua atau tiga tahun menjelang pilihan raya umum akan datang, mereka boleh menilai sendiri keupayaan BN memenuhi janji yang dibuat itu,” katanya di sini, semalam.

Ketika berceramah di Manek Urai Lama Rabu lalu, Muhyiddin berkata, tawaran itu dibuat kerana Kerajaan Pusat mempunyai sumber dan kemampuan untuk memenuhi semua janji kepada penduduk Manek Urai, berbanding lawan yang hanya tahu menyalahkan Kerajaan Pusat apabila gagal memenuhi segala janji.

Beliau berkata, hakikat yang perlu disedari oleh rakyat, tanpa kehadiran agensi pembangunan Kerajaan Pusat seperti Lembaga Kemajuan Kelantan Selatan (Kesedar) di Hulu Kelantan selama ini, kawasan Manek Urai akan lebih jauh ketinggalan berbanding keadaan sekarang .

“Kita pilih pemimpin atau wakil rakyat adalah untuk membimbing kita supaya memaju dan membangunkan Manek Urai. Bukan setakat anak angkat tetapi kita mahu buktikan, Manek Urai menjadi anak emas,” katanya.

Berikutan itu, Tuan Aziz berkata, beliau mengambil pendekatan memberi penerangan terhadap matlamat perjuangan BN untuk keselesaan dan kesejahteraan penduduk Manek Urai, bagi memastikan pengundi memahaminya sebelum memangkah kertas undi kelak, Selasa ini.

While in overseas, when asked, Malaysians will tell that they are Malaysians and came from Malaysia.

BUT.

Why is it that in Malaysia, when asked, the same Malaysians will answer that they are either Malay, Chinese, Indian or Others. Why can’t we be Malaysians nevertheless where we are, be it negara orang berhujankan emas or negara tanahair?

If you ask an Aussie, they will claim that they’re an Aussie regardless of their anglo-saxon, hispanic, asian, arabic or whatever their ancestry background were.

From Swine Flu to Science-and-Maths-teaching to Politics to Quotas to blablabla. Sigh. After 52 years, bila sebenarnya Malaysia akan merdeka dari Ethnic Racism?

Babble languages have been around for a very long time, possibly since the origins of humanity. Humans learned early on that they liked the sound of their own voices very much, and the evolution of such a complex vocal apparatus had to be used for something, but at the same time the ability to think about things other than basic animal thoughts (eating, sleeping,reproducing, and watching television) made listening to other humans a real chore. Babbling was invented to fulfill the desire to make noises at other people, while politely avoiding the exertion of comprehending another’s thoughts.

Ultimately, babbling was unable to keep people from sharing new ideas with each other, which led to cooperation and lying. Some experts claim that regular language has been terrible for education, since children now learn things indirectly rather than experiencing the dangers of rabid animals themselves.

I’ve written quite a length for that piece and I THINK that was the best ever piece I’ve written so far (masalahnya, aku memang tak banyak menulis pun sebelum ini. hehe). I’ve got the paper back few days ago and though the grades were OK (actually ini markah terbaik pernah aku dapat untuk research essay), I felt that my writings in general, is still below the expected standard and much is there to be improved than to be satisfied for. As usual, grammar is my main weakness and several sentence structure remains incomprehensive.  Sigh. Macam mana nak improve ye? Sentiasa berasa jealous kepada mereka yang berbakat hebat dalam penulisan seperti xxx, yyy dan zzz, whether be it creative writings or academic writings.

Anyway, would like to publish the Introduction and Conclusion of the piece and thoughtful critics are most invited. Those who wants more info on this policy could personally contact me and further arrangements could be made.

Learning from a Success Story: Integrating the Dutch Bike-and-Ride within Melbourne’s Transport Policy

Introduction

Transportation has been one of the most important discussions in any planning policies or issues, especially in this era of new urbanism and growing concerns towards the environment. These discussions have been focussing on ways of developing or improving urban transport systems on which will foster sustainable environment and healthy communities, both contributing to the improvement of the status of liveable city (Cupples and Ridley 2008). On most occasions, the objective hence far is to reduce private car-trips and the emphasis has been on endeavouring better public transportation systems and services, while several advocates on accentuating cycling to a better level (Cupples and Ridley 2008; Krizek and Johnson 2006; Dodson and Sipe no date). While both components are widely viewed as a move towards environmentally sustainable solution of urban transport, it is important to realize that each component has its drawback and an optimum outcome would not be generalised if these two components were ‘separated’ in the practise, such as in the case of Melbourne’s transportation policies. The Department of Transport Victoria and the City of Melbourne has formulated many impressive policies in regard to Melbourne’s public transportation and cycling essentials, but often, these policies collide or do not reflect their true intention when it comes into practise (Mees et al 2007; Degnan 2006). An integration of both public transport and bicycle policies are crucial in addressing this issue; such example of cohesive integration of public transport and bicycle could be refer to the case study of the Dutch bike-and-ride policy under the initiative of Netherlands’ Bicycle Master Plan in 1992 (Martens 2007).

This essay will describe the Dutch bike-and-ride policy noting its aspects and criteria, which makes this policy applicable to address the Melbourne issues. Evidence of this policy’s success in Netherlands will be analysed thoughtfully vis-à-vis similar outcomes would be achieved in Melbourne. How this policy could be feasibly improved and incorporated within the existing Melbourne situation is discussed, while potential problems associating with the implementation of this policy are provisioned and matched with solutions, where possible.

Conclusion

The lesson learned from Netherlands’ Bicycle Master Plan particularly on the bike-and-ride policy has enlighten the idea of integrating both bicycle and public transport as a mean of sustainable and flexible form of transportation. Among many projects encompassing the policy, three have been selected for discussion, namely; the “bicycle-bus-bicycle” product, the PT-bicycle scheme and the “Space for the Bicycle” program. These projects are proven to generate reputable results, especially outcomes that are in favour to Melbourne issues, notably in; provisioning the right policies to be tabled, informing an alternative solution to public transport issues and providing an effective method to reduce car dependency. It is learned that with several adjustment and improvisation, the policy (in reference to the three projects) could feasibly be applied into the context of Melbourne. Potential problems owing to these implementations need to acknowledge and to be pre-empting with possible solutions. It is in the best interest for Melbourne that this success story be learned and be applied into context.
